What is needed or required?

What you bring and what you need at the CRAWLATHON depends on what trip(s) you plan to take. Each trip is given a RATING. You must have the REQUIRED EQUIPMENT for the level of trip you sign up for. The guides can remove you from their trip if you do not meet the equipment requirements. Here is a description of each level and the REQUIRED EQUIPMENT for that particular level:

Difficulty Ratings


Level 1

LEVEL 1: These trips are walking trips that involve stooping and bending over; possibly, some brief hand and knee crawling.


Level 2

LEVEL 2: These trips offer prolonged crawling through small, constricted passages. They are less demanding than higher levels because these trips will be less than 3 hours long.


Level 3

LEVEL 3: These trips offer prolonged crawling and or belly crawls through small, constricted passages. Trips will last 3-6 hours. Wet conditions may or may not exist creating the possibility of hypothermia. 15 year old minimum, and must pass a 12 inch squeeze test.


Level 4

LEVEL 4: These trips involve SPECIAL SKILLS which you will need to know before hand. Each trip listed as Level 4 will give specific information in the description. 15 year old minimum, and must pass a 12 inch squeeze test.

 

Equipment Required


Level 1

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Old clothes, gloves, comfortable (broken in) shoes that cover the ankle, a good flashlight with extra batteries & bulb, and a backup light source. Most level 1 trips require hard hats with chin strap. Read the trip descriptions for details.

Levels 2 - 4

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Non-Insulated Coveralls or layers of clothing that can be adjusted according to climate conditions you'll encounter both above and below ground. Boots that cover the ankles, kneepads, gloves, a hard hat with chin strap, 3 light sources with one mounted on hard hat, small pack to carry bottled water, snacks, extra batteries ect. Elbow pads are required for level 3 & 4 cave trips and are highly recommended for level 2 cave trips.

Here Are The Rules

Each field trip is limited to a specific number of people and is available only to those who have confirmed reservations. Eligibility of participants on all field trips is determined by the field leaders of that trip. Their decision is final and is not subject to appeal. All caves and public meeting places are considered smoke-free environments. Alcohol is not permitted in public places and anyone found to be intoxicated or impaired for any reason will not be allowed to participate in any of the field trips.
